Two-times champion, Korea DPR demolished Argentina to open their 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Cali, Columbia.

Korea DPR netted six goals, roundly defeating the Argentines, while Kishi Nunez scored two brilliant goals for the South Americans.it was one of the two they conceded that will live long in the memory.

The Asians needed only five minutes to find the back of the net. A spilled cross by Argentine goalkeeper, Paulina Aprile, presented Pak Miryong with a close-range tap-in.

Four minutes later, a stunner from Jon Ryongjong made it 2-0 in favour of the North Koreans. An own goal from Samantha Helen Weiss, made it three, compounding Argentina’s day.

Five minutes into first-half stoppage time, a brilliant Nunez dribbled past two Koreans before launching a rocket from close to 45 yards that thundered off the underside of the bar and into the Korean goal. Kishi Nunez, produced one of the finest goals in the 22-year history of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

However, a minute into the second half, Korea DPR made it 4-1, when Hyang Sin headed home Ryong-Jong Jon’s cross. They extended that lead via a tidy, close-range finish from Choe Ilson with a quarter of an hour to play.

Another fine goal from Nunez, a curler into the far corner, made it 5-2, more of another consolation and a double for Nunez.

Korea DPR ended the game with their sixth, a deflected, long-range effort from Choe Kangryon. They also had a goal ruled off by VAR to keep the scoreline as 6-2.

The Asians will face Costa Rica next, while Argentina battle Netherlands.

In the other game of Group F, Netherlands saw off a lively Costa Rica in their World Cup 2024 opener.

Goals from either half by Veerle Buurman and substitute Eva Oude Elberink, sealed the comfortable victory for the Dutch.

Central defender, Buurman, broke the deadlock with a header from a 24th-minute corner to  give the 2022 semi-finalists the lead.

The Dutch came close twice to adding the second but shot wide and got another saved by the Costa Rican goalkeeper, Genesis Perez.

Costa Rica also came close to equalising when Sianyf Aguero flashed an effort across the face of goal early in the second period.

Netherlands doubled the advantage in the 74th minute to secure the win. A cross from Louise Van Oosten, allowing substitute Elberink to prod home from the top of the six-yard box.

The Dutch will face Argentina as Costa Rica faces an uphill task against title favourites, Korea DPR.
