Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior scored penalties to help Real Madrid earn a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad.
Real Madrid secured the win after been denied repeatedly by the woodwork to get their third win in La Liga.
Vinicius put the visitors ahead in the 58th minute after an unnecessary handball by Sergio Gómez. The Brazilian stepped up and converted calmly to break the deadlock.
Mbappe cemented the win in the 75th after a VAR review awarded Madrid a penalty. Sociedad defender Jon Aramburu stomped on Vinicius’ foot in the box, which saw the French captain doubled the lead.
Real Madrid has the goal post to thank as Real Sociedad were denied repeatedly by the goal-frame.
Luka Sucic hit the post twice, and Sheraldo Becker also sent a ball off the crossbar.
Carlo Ancelotti said after the game, “We probably didn’t deserve to win. But we knew how to dig in during the worst moments. I value that sacrifice that is often tough to see on a team with the talent that this one has.”
Real Sociedad coach, also commented after the game. He said, “We are angry at ourselves because we were better than they were today.”
He also credited Ancelotti’s team for the victory. “We played a great game against the best team in the league and one of the best teams in the Champions League”, he added.
Sociedad has lost all three homes games this season putting them in a precarious position.
Real Madrid are one point behind leader, Barcelona, who visits Girona on Sunday afternoon. They also open their Champions League defense against Stuttgart on Tuesday.
