Dutch striker, Joshua Zirkzee had seized the opportunity to reconnect with his former teammates after Erik Ten Hag approves his request to travel to Liverpool.
He didn’t get the opportunity to bid farewell to Bologna when he left to join Manchester United over the summer. Zirkzee was eager to reunite with his old colleagues, who had arrived in Merseyside for their Champions League match against Liverpool at Anfield.
Following Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, Zirkzee sought approval to make the short trip across the North West to Bologna’s team hotel. The club granted this despite the ongoing turmoil at Old Trafford.
After exchanging warm hugs and handshakes, Zirkzee stayed with his former teammates until around 10:30pm on Tuesday night. Zirkzee had been a key figure in Bologna’s qualification for the Champions League last season, scoring 11 goals in 34 Serie A matches.
It was a busy summer for the 23-year-old. He sealed his £36.5million deal to the Red Devils only five days after Holland’s Euro 2024 semi-final defeat to England. But the former striker for Bayern Munich made it plain in an impassioned speech that was made public. He said Bologna would always have a particular place in his heart.
He wrote in July: “Grazie, Rossoblu. I can’t really find the words to explain how much you all mean to me. The stadium, the city, this team, but especially the PEOPLE who will always have a special place in my heart.
“I hope that for all the support and trust that you gave me, I have given something back in return. Bologna is finally where it belongs and I will support and cheer for you from a distance! Ti Amo, Bolo. Forever”
Zirkzee’s underwhelming United displays have swiftly come under fire despite netting a late winner from the bench on his debut against Fulham.
