Liverpool, under the management of Arne Slot, have made an impressive start to the season, losing just one game in both the Premier League and Champions League.

The Dutch coach has mostly depended on a consistent set of players, with minimal changes to the lineup. Andy Robertson has been the preferred left-back. While Kostas Tsimikas has stepped in as a reliable backup when needed.

However, at 30, Robertson might not have many years left at the top level of football. Looking ahead, Liverpool have been linked with potential left-back replacements, one of them being Alvaro Carreras from Benfica.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has caught the attention of the Reds. This is according to Spanish publication AS, though the specifics of his release clause were not disclosed.

Now, as per Portuguese outlet, O Jogo, Liverpool have to agree to a £41.8m fee (50 million euros clause) to sign Carreras.

The media outlet have mentioned that the Reds are preparing a move for the future. They want alternative to Andy Robertson in the short-term and replacement in the long-term.

Alvaro had a great start to the season with four clean sheets from seven starts in all competitions. According to the report, it was the 21-year-old’s performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League that convinced Liverpool of his credentials.

Carreras seems like an ideal candidate for Liverpool’s future plans. Except for one notable detail—he has a past connection with Manchester United.

If Liverpool successfully sign Carreras, it’s likely to anger the United supporters, especially given their club’s missed opportunity. Regardless of where he ends up, Carreras has shown considerable promise.

Liverpool’s interest in him is a clear indication of his potential. Now it’s up to him to develop further, whether he makes the move to Anfield or another club.
