Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes Cole Palmer could join Barcelona if the Blues fail to win a trophy this season.

According to Gallas, Palmer may want to leave Chelsea if they don’t improve under Enzo Maresca and become serious contenders for trophies.

Gallas said: “Cole Palmer might want to leave Chelsea in the future if they don’t show they can win trophies. But where would he go? Barcelona would be a great move for him. But they have great young players already like Lamine Yamal and might also be signing Nico Williams.

Gallas also pointed out that Palmer won’t be happy seeing his England teammates win trophies while he doesn’t. Especially if he keeps performing well. He added that Barcelona would suit the midfielder’s style.

“Palmer looks like he is going to have a very similar season to last year and even though he is young. It will be tough to see his friends winning trophies if he isn’t at Chelsea despite the way he is playing.

“I won’t be surprised if he wants to speak to Chelsea in the summer if they again fail to win a trophy. He will want to know clearly what their targets are.”

However, there’s no sign Palmer is planning to leave Chelsea for Barcelona. The English midfielder recently renewed his contract with Chelsea, which now runs until 2033.

It would require a huge bid for Barcelona to sign him. Palmer is currently on international duty with England. Though he will return to Chelsea this week.

He is expected to join the squad travelling to Anfield on Sunday. Where they hope to build on their strong start to the season. Gallas’ prediction may only be relevant at season’s end.

Cole Palmer is in his second season at Stamford Bridge since his switch from Manchester City. Although many questioned the move at the time the 22-year-old has proven to be a blessing. He has scored an impressive 31 goals in 54 games for the Blues, and has six in nine appearances this season, including four in one game against Brighton.
