The New York Liberty has made history by winning their first WNBA championship, defeating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in an intense overtime game. This thrilling victory marks the end of a 28-year wait for the Liberty, one of the original franchises in the league.

The game was a nail-biter, with the Liberty trailing by two in regulation before Breanna Stewart tied the game with two free throws, sending it into overtime. In OT, Leonie Fiebich started off strong with a 3-pointer, followed by Nyara Sabally’s steal and layup, securing a 65-60 lead and sending the sellout crowd into a frenzy.

Jonquel Jones led the Liberty with 17 points and was named MVP. The team’s stars, Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, struggled on offense, but their teammates stepped up to secure the win.

This championship is a testament to the Liberty’s perseverance, having made it to the WNBA Finals five times before but falling short each time. Coach Sandy Brondello’s leadership and strategy played a crucial role in their victory.

The Liberty’s win not only brings joy to their fans but also sets a new record for attendance in the WNBA Finals, with a sellout crowd of 18,090 at the Barclays Center.
