Dominic Thiem has reflected on his impressive tennis journey after officially retiring early this week.
The 31-year-old Austrian put to an end to his professional tennis career on Monday after losing a round of 32 encounter on home soil at the Vienna Open to Italian Luciano Darderi 7-6,6-2.
Prior to the defeat, the 2020 US open champion Dominic Thiem, has earlier announced he will retire from active play in this season’s Austria open at the beginning of the season.
“When I think back on my career, the main emotions are really big gratitude for everything I was able to experience,” Thiem said in an ATP interview earlier this year.
“I was very lucky to stay healthy [most of] the time to be able to realise basically all my dreams. And yeah, I was never expecting a career like that when I was young. All I wanted was to be a professional tennis player, whatever comes with it.”
Thiem reached the finals of four majors, winning one. Twice he lost to Nadal in the final of Roland Garros, once he lost the championship match at the Australian Open to Djokovic.
“The privilege of playing in the same era, like the Big Three, like the Big Four, I’m very happy about it,” Thiem continued. “I’m really proud and happy that I was in the same era like them.”
“I’m super happy that I got the chance to play US Open, my last match here on this court. Now I can spend time with you guys and say thank you to all of you and make the time up for what we have missed four years ago.”
