In 2022, Manchester United made a strong push to sign Frenkie de Jong. They even created a video montage featuring the Barcelona star alongside club legends to convince him to join. However according to recent reports, he never actually saw the video,
Erik ten Hag, who recently left United, made De Jong his top priority when he joined the club. United spent most of the summer trying to sway him. But several issues, like United’s absence from the Champions League that season and Barcelona’s unpaid deferred wages to him, made him hesitant to move to Old Trafford.
Ultimately, the deal fell and United turned to Casemiro instead. While Casemiro brought defensive strength, he didn’t add the creative midfield play that Ten Hag had hoped de Jong would provide.
Despite failing to bring him in that summer, United have continued to show interest in him. With De Jong delaying his contract renewal at Barcelona, United might try again in the upcoming January transfer window.
However, since De Jong was a key target under Ten Hag, the coach’s departure might end the club’s pursuit. United are currently in talks with Ruben Amorim, Sporting CP’s coach, as a possible replacement for Ten Hag.
