Tottenham celebrated a memorable week with a dominant 4-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League few hours ago.
Fresh off their midweek win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, manager Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his lineup for the match against Unai Emery’s side.
Early chances were scarce, but Rodrigo Bentancur came close with a dipping shot that hit the roof of the net. Despite Tottenham’s stronger openings, Villa took the lead in the 32nd minute when Morgan Rogers scored from close range.
Tottenham equalized in the 49th minute, as Brennan Johnson finished with a “trademark” back-post shot after a perfect cross from Son Heung-min. Just minutes later, Dominic Solanke nearly put Spurs ahead but was denied by Emi Martinez’s low save.
Solanke scored in the 75th minute, chipping over Martinez after a clever reverse pass from Dejan Kulusevski. He then added another in the 79th minute, tapping in Richarlison’s cross from close range.
Tottenham scored a fourth goal in stoppage time as James Maddison came off the bench and scored directly from a free-kick.
Postecoglou faced a tough choice with his midfield lineup after a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace, where Spurs struggled in midfield. Maddison’s starting place was in question after Pape Matar Sarr’s strong showing against West Ham the previous weekend.
This time, Postecoglou chose Sarr to join Kulusevski and Bentancur, placing Maddison on the bench for the second game in a row after being unused in the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City.
Before the game, Postecoglou told Sky Sports, “They are all the same calls, irrespective. We have got to put 11 out there, we have a good squad… Madders will be coming on today and I am sure there will be an impact when he does.”
Maddison, once a regular starter, has faced increased competition from Kulusevski’s impressive form. However, Maddison reminded everyone of his skills with a superb free-kick goal in the final moments, showing exactly what he can contribute.
