Man United started this season poorly under Ten Hag, despite giving him a two-year contract extension in the summer. After only four wins in their first 14 matches, the club decided to let him go.
Recently, Manchester United announced the appointment of Amorim from Sporting CP. The Portuguese coach joined Old Trafford a few weeks ago. The financial statements reveal that sacking Ten Hag cost the club £10.4 million (about $13.1 million). This amount also included compensation for other departing staff, like Ruud van Nistelrooy.
On the other hand, signing Amorim cost United £11 million (around $13.9 million). This figure covered his release clause from Sporting, buying out his notice period, and bringing in his coaching staff. The club had considered firing Ten Hag earlier in the summer, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS chose to keep him. In hindsight, that decision cost the club more because Ten Hag’s contract only lasted until 2025.
Overall, the expenses for these two changes exceeded £21 million (approximately $26.5 million). As a result, United has informed Amorim that he will have limited financial freedom during the first two transfer windows.
However, United had given Amorim the dream start to his managerial career in the Premier League as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring after less than two minutes.
