Ismaila Sarr scored two goals to help Crystal Palace beat Brighton 3-1 in a heated M23 rivalry match. Trevoh Chalobah scored a controversial first goal, giving Palace their first win against Brighton in seven attempts.
Crystal Palace had a tough start this season, failing to win any of their first eight matches. However, they have improved and only lost one of their last eight games.
Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler had a difficult day in his first Premier League derby. Brighton felt they were unlucky with some decisions, especially in the early moments when Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson avoided a red card for a dangerous challenge on Yankuba Minteh.
Palace took the lead in the 27th minute. Eberechi Eze carried the ball into Brighton’s half after referee Michael Oliver blocked a tackle. Despite the confusion, a corner kick led to Chalobah scoring after Brighton failed to defend a corner effectively. VAR reviewed the goal but allowed it to stand.
Palace quickly scored again five minutes later. Tyrick Mitchell crossed the ball for Sarr, who had an easy header to score. At halftime, Brighton brought in Julio Enciso for Tariq Lamptey to boost their attack. Almost immediately, Kaoru Mitoma’s shot was blocked, and Lewis Dunk’s header was saved by Henderson.
Henderson made a fantastic save from Enciso’s curling shot. Meanwhile, Palace had a goal disallowed for a foul by Sarr on Pervis Estupinan. But with eight minutes left, Sarr scored his second by holding off Dunk and finishing past the Brighton goalkeeper.
Brighton managed to score from a corner, with Marc Guehi’s involvement, but Henderson made another great save from Enciso to keep the score 3-1, ensuring Palace celebrated on their journey back to south London.
