South African national team captain, Ronwen Williams, was crowned as the African best goalkeeper at the 2024 CAF Awards.

Williams claimed the award, having faced competition from Manchester United and Cameroon goalkeeper, Andre Onana, as well as Ivorian Yahia Fofana.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper was impressive at both club and country level. He was pivotal in Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent back-to-back title success since joining the club.

He also played a key role in South Africa’s third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire as he saved two penalties against DR Congo. The South African was then voted as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Williams’ remarkable performance saw him nominated for the Ballon d’Or earlier this year. He made history as the first player from an African club to be nominated for the award.

The South African captain also won the Interclub Best Men Player of the Year. He was also nominated for the best player in the continent but lost to Nigerian Ademola Lookman.

However, he failed to make the list of CAF Best Eleven, losing his place to Andre Onana.
