Liverpool legend, Dietmar Hamann is critical of Federico Chiesa’s transfer from Juventus, calling it a “nightmare” due to the player’s ongoing fitness issues.
Chiesa, who joined Liverpool for a low fee of £11 million on a four-year contract, has struggled since he suffered an ACL injury during the 2021-22 season. He has missed 86 games in total, including 14 this season due to a muscle injury sustained in late September. Although he has recovered, it may take time for him to rejoin the team’s plans.
Arne Slot commented on the situation, stating that Chiesa needs playing time but finding it difficult to give him minutes after such a long absence. He has only played 78 minutes this season, which complicates his return to form.
Hamann emphasized the challenge for Chiesa in adapting to a new league and club. He pointed out that moving to the Premier League can be tough, citing the experience of Juan Sebastian Veron, who struggled in England despite being highly regarded. Hamann believes this transition is tougher for Chiesa, especially since Liverpool has strong attacking options right now.
Despite these challenges, Slot offered some hope for Chiesa, saying he could get playing time in the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Southampton.
However, he noted that Chiesa might not play a full 90 minutes due to his recent inactivity. Slot mentioned that with several starters likely resting, managing Chiesa’s minutes will be essential.
