No.2 seed Iga Swiatek has achieved yet another milestone after storming into a 10th Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career with an emphatic victory over Germany’s Eva Lys at the Australian Open on Monday.
The 23-year-old Iga Swiatek swept into the quarterfinals for the second time with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of lucky loser Eva Lys in 59 minutes.
And with that victory, she hits a new milestone: Swiatek is now through to the 10th Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career.
Having reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last year, this is also the first time in her career that she’s made the quarterfinals or better at back-to-back majors outside of Roland Garros.
Swiatek is the youngest woman to reach her 10th Grand Slam quarterfinal in 16 years, since Svetlana Kuznetsova reached her 10th at the 2009 Australian Open.
Kuznetsova was a slightly younger 23 than Swiatek at the time.
The five-time major champion has dropped just 11 games in four matches so far, seven of which were lost in the first round to Katerina Siniakova.
The Pole remains in contention to reclaim the World No.1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka next Monday. Sabalenka will need to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Tuesday’s quarterfinal in order to stay ahead of Swiatek.
If Swiatek also wins her quarterfinal, Sabalenka will need to reach the final. If the pair meet in the final, the winner will walk away with the World No.1 ranking.
