Former Real Madrid and Brazil left-back, Marcelo has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.
Marcelo started his career at Fluminense before joining Madrid at age 18 in 2007. He spent 15 years at the Santiago Bernabeu, becoming one of the most decorated players in history.
The left-back won 25 trophies with Los Blancos, including the Champions League on five occasions and LaLiga six times.
Announcing the end of his career on the pitch, the Brazilian made a video in Instagram, acknowledging Real Madrid.
“At 18, Real Madrid came knocking & I arrived. I can proudly say I’m a true ‘Madrileño’.
“16 seasons, 25 titles, 5 UCLs, one of the captains & many magical nights at Bernabéu.
“Real Madrid is a unique club. Madridismo is an indescribable feeling.
“My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything”, the video stated.
Marcelo went on to play 546 games for Madrid , before spending five months at Olympiacos, then returning to Fluminense in February 2023.
Madrid then posted a statement of their own, celebrating the Brazilian’s retirement.
The Club said, “Following Marcelo’s announcement that he is retiring as a professional football player, Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection to him.
“Marcelo belongs to the history of Real Madrid and is one of the great legends of the club and of world football.”
The legendary left-back also won 58 caps for Brazil and scored six international goals.
