Memphis Depay, Manchester United’s former star, has released a statement following a drink-driving conviction in Monaco. He was stopped by police last August while driving his Rolls-Royce. It was discovered that he was over the legal alcohol limit.
A court in Monaco imposed a four-month suspended jail term and a £7,500 fine on him. Memphis did not attend the court hearing. However, he later addressed the situation through social media.
In his statement, Memphis said: “I would like to come on here and apologize. Last summer during my holidays in Monaco I made a mistake, and decided to drive home after having some drinks in a restaurant.” He admitted, “I should’ve got into a taxi instead, but I didn’t.”
He also expressed his accountability for his actions. He mentioned that 2024 was a year of lessons for him. He concluded, “2025 we will do better.”
Memphis is no longer playing in Europe. He joined Brazilian club Corinthians as a free agent in September after his time with Atletico Madrid ended. During that time, he contributed to just 15 goals in 40 appearances.
He has two weeks to appeal the court’s decision, but it seems unlikely he will do so. In addition to his sentence, Memphis also cannot drive in Monaco for the next two years.
