Liverpool moved another inch closer to winning the Premier League title with a key victory at Anfield against Newcastle United last night.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored the opening goal in the 11th minute after receiving a pass from Luis Díaz. This goal marked Liverpool’s 100th in all competitions for the season, making them the first Premier League club to reach that milestone.
Newcastle faced a setback before the game when their top scorer, Alexander Isak, was sidelined with a groin injury. Callum Wilson replaced him but missed two great scoring chances in the first half, failing to test Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker.
Liverpool extended their lead in the second half with a goal from Alexis Mac Allister, assisted by Mohamed Salah. This was Mac Allister’s third league goal this season, while Salah reached 42 goals. He joined an elite group of players with 17 or more assists in a Premier League season.
With this win and Arsenal’s draw against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool increased their lead at the top of the table to 13 points. They have gone unbeaten in 24 Premier League games, keeping the most clean sheets this season. Salah’s assist record from open play is among the best in Premier League history, with only Thierry Henry having a higher total.
