Real Madrid earned a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

The defending champions claimed the win with goals from Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz.

Los Blancos went ahead early with Rodrygo netting in the 4th minute. The Brazilian sprinted past Javi Galan and drove inside before bending a wonderful effort past Jan Oblak.

Atletico then got back into the game in the 32nd minute with another wonderful goal from Julian Alvarez.

The in-form Argentine picked up the ball on the left side, outclassed Eduardo Camavinga and whipped a spectacular curling strike to beat Thibaut Courtois.

The former Manchester City striker made it his seventh goal in nine appearances in the competition.

However, another former Manchester City player, Diaz, starring for Madrid, claimed the decisive goal in the Madrid derby.

The Moroccan skilfully sent Atletico defender Jose Gimenez to the floor in the box before driving a low shot into the far corner in the 55th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who stepped up in Jude Bellingham’s absence, gave Carlo Ancelotti’s side the slender advantage.

Meanwhile, Bellingham missed the game as he is serving a one-game suspension after picking up his third yellow card in the competition against Manchester City earlier this month.

Bellingham will however be available for the defending champions when they travel to Wanda Metropolitano for the return leg on Wednesday, 12 March.
