Romelu Lukaku and Luka Modric are the latest players to turn down a summer transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. There are reports that Modric has rejected the move to Saudi Arabia despite being offered a massive salary deal worth €200 million (£170 million/$219 million) over three years.
Al-Hilal had hoped to entice the Croatian international to play for them hoping that he will be moved by the presence of stars Christiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the league but they are mistaken. Both Modric and Lukaku, who is on loan from Chelsea to Inter Milan, have been targeted by the Saudi Pro League’s strong recruitment campaign.
The striker having turned down the opportunity to move has said he will prefer to stay in Italy. Modric has already agreed to an extension of his contract with Real and will stay with the team for at least another year.
The former Ballon d’Or winner joined the team in 2012 and has since amassed 488 appearances while winning everything there is to win. Additionally, he led Croatia to the World Cup championship.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia are still vying for top players to join their league and seem to be getting closer to landing Hakim Ziyech from Chelsea.
