When the annual offseason signing period for the league begins the following week, Kyle Kuzma will be a free agent.

According to a source with knowledge of his choice, Kuzma has chosen not to exercise his $13 million player option with the Washington Wizards for the upcoming season, making him a free agent. Because neither party revealed the move, the individual talked to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

ESPN was the first to disclose Kuzma had turned down the offer. The decision made by Kuzma to forego exercising his option was not unexpected given that he had already stated as much to The Washington Post and The Athletic in December. Considering the price Kuzma will command in the market, his choice makes sense.

Kuzma is coming off the highest-scoring season of his six-year career. He averaged 21.2 points for the Wizards, who are finalizing a trade that will send three-time All-Star Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns. It’s possible that Kuzma could return to Washington on a far more lucrative deal; $13 million for someone averaging more than 20 points a game would be an absolute steal.
On the other hand, the Toronto Raptors said on Tuesday that guard Gary Trent Jr. has activated his $18.5 million option for the upcoming season, preventing him from becoming a free agency.

Trent averaged 17.4 points for Toronto last season, making it three years in a row that he has averaged at least 15 points.

Trent, the son of legendary NBA forward Gary Trent, has played for the Raptors and Portland throughout the course of his five-year career, averaging 14.4 points per game.
