Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala has revealed that she is approaching each game for Nigeria at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, focusing on her performance rather than seeking the limelight.

The Super Falcons started with a draw against Group B’s highest-ranked team, Canada, in their opening game and are now optimistic as they prepare for their second match against co-hosts Australia on Thursday, July 27.

She said: “When I step my foot on the pitch, I don’t really think about the crowd any longer. Some people say they get nervous when the crowd is too much, but for me, it is different,” she said to BBC.

“I’m just out there to do my job, I’m about my business.

“This is top-level football, and it demands self-reflection. Even if you win the game, you have to ask yourself questions like, ‘Ok, maybe I could be better with the pass’ or whatever.”

Speaking about the responsibilities she carries as a role model to numerous aspiring youngsters who look up to her, the five-time African Women’s Player of the Year added: “There are a whole lot of kids out there in Africa who actually look up to me; they tell me ‘you’re my icon, you’re my idol,’ and all of that, so I just keep doing what I’m doing,” she shared with humility.

“That’s why I always say when I play games, I just want to have fun. I want to score goals. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end.”
