Following their 3-2 win over Australia in their last game, the Super Falcons of Nigeria held for a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland today to book their slot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout stages as they extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Nigeria who needed a win to top Group B nearly got off the game to a perfect start when Asisat Oshoala broke free in behind the Irish defence. However, her effort was sent wide of the target.

The Super Falcons had everything going for them in the first half, but couldn’t work their efforts to get a goal against an Ireland side who’s yet to secure a World Cup win.

The second half was not any different, as Nigeria were forced to settle for a goalless draw that ensured they finish the group in second place and must now wait patiently to await who they will face in the last-16, while Ireland crashed out of the tournament on their debut.

The win ensures that the Super Falcons for the first time in their history played all group-stage matches without tasting defeat.
