Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, Chelsea has named Reece James as the side’s first-choice captain, taking over from Ceasar Azpilicueta who recently brought his 11-year stint at the club to an end.

The right-back who had limited game time last season due to injuries has now fully recovered and has been bestowed with the tasking responsibilities as the club’s captain.

Expressing his delight over his new role, James said: “I’m so happy to take on the role and responsibility.

“I know I’ve got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.

“I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family.”

Mauricio Pochettino also added: “This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

“He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.”

James has spent the past 17 years at Stamford Bridge, and he was actively part of the squad that recently won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup under Thomas Tuchel.

Filling for James as vice-captain will be ex-Leicester City defender and fellow compatriot Ben Chilwell.
