Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal has been called up for the first time by Spain at the age of 16 for the Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Georgia and Cyprus. Yamal has made his first team debut at Barcelona and performed admirably for Xavi’s club, earning starts in their most recent two games.

Yamal excelled against Villarreal and was a key factor in the Yellow Submarine’s 4-3 victory. In order to persuade him to play for Spain rather than Morocco, representatives of the Spanish football federation have met with him. He is now about to make his senior squad debut.

Yamal will wear the La Roja jersey when Spain plays Georgia on Friday if he participates in the match. In the process, he will break the previous record held by Gavi, who made his debut in October 2021 against Italy at the age of 17 years and 62 days.

De la Fuente: “We met him in Barcelona. He was a stalwart of Spain’s youth teams and is a footballer with exceptional power. He looks like he has been touched by the wand of God. He is different.”

“We look at the level of the player, not the age. He is ready to compete at the highest level. He is a very important asset for the future.”

Yamal will be aiming for additional playing time on Sunday when Barcelona plays Osasuna in La Liga. Later, on September 8, he’ll team up with Spain to take on Georgia, followed by Cyprus four days after.
