Jose Bordalas Getafe’s manager has disclosed that Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham advised Mason Greenwood to leave Manchester United and move to Spain. At the close of the summer transfer window, the 21-year-old forward was permitted to leave Old Trafford.
After a protracted internal probe, it was determined that Greenwood would not be staying in Manchester any time soon. Despite having links to teams in Italy, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, he ultimately decided to sign a season-long contract with Getafe.
Bellingham, a player for England, was already in La Liga at the time after moving for his own €103 million (£88 million/$110 million) to Santiago Bernabeu, and he reportedly urged that Greenwood take a similar route. Bordalas has said: “Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league.”
Since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control, Greenwood hasn’t played for United. In February 2023, those accusations were dismissed, allowing him to resume his professional career. Upon signing the player, who has scored 22 goals in the Premier League, Bordalas added: “It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that.
“But they got in touch with our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen but both sides made an effort [financially].”
Greenwood has gotten positive feedback from Getafe supporters and may make his team’s debut on Sunday when they play against Osasuna. Although he lacks some match fitness and mental acuity at the moment.
“He is a fantastic player. You have to be patient, calm, he hasn’t played in a year and a half. We and his colleagues are helping him. He is integrating in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.”
