Danny Murphy, Liverpool’s ex-midfielder has claimed that his former club is very much still in intention of the title despite their 2-1 slim loss to Tottenham on Saturday night at the Tottenham Stadium. The nine-man Reds lost the fight towards the last minute of game after Joel Matip gave-away an own goal to gift Tottenham the win and ended Liverpool’s six game unbeaten streak.
But despite the slip in progression for the Jurgen Klopp side, Murphy who was the Match of the Day analyst thinks the Reds’ effort in a game where several calls went against them distinguishes them as serious Premier League title candidates.
Recall that, two of Liverpool’s players, Curtis Jones in the first half and Diego Jota in the 69th minute were sent off during the clash of titans against Tottenham.
Murphy continued by saying, “Even in defeat, Liverpool showed they are in this title race. To show the resilience to compete against Spurs with 10 and then nine men, and even create chances to win it, should give them enormous belief.”
“Once the dust has settled, it was a phenomenal effort. Sometimes you can take more from a loss than an easy win, and Liverpool have repeatedly shown this season they are fighters.”
He further added that by pointing to Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk’s return to form as another positive development. He is correct to highlight a performance in the face of adversity that will inspire Reds supporters, even though the loss and the absurdity of the defeat will undoubtedly hurt in the near term.
There is still much to play for in the race for the championship this season, especially after Manchester City suffered a shocking loss against Wolves and displayed some faults in the process. Liverpool hosts Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday night before traveling to Brighton, they will have the opportunity to put the events of yesterday behind them.
