The Premier League has started a secret investigation into Everton’s alleged financial rule violations according to reports. The Toffees were accused of violating Financial Fair Play rules after they recorded losses above the benchmark.

Everton were said to have lost nearly £372 million over time, much exceeding the £105 million allowed buffer.

Daily Mail claims that as part of the probe, an independent commission has been established, and in private sessions, Everton and the Premier League will both submit their cases.

Meanwhile, the Premier League is likely to make their decision next week.

But the tribunal has no time limit and may declare the penalties—which could be a fine, a transfer ban, or even a drop in points—next month.

The proceedings are taking place in complete secrecy. It is thought that just a few of the club’s top executives were aware of the trials. Nevertheless, considering the different exceptions that were granted as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, the club is still optimistic that they would be exonerated of the allegations.

Burnley, Leeds, and Leicester are ready to sue Everton for £300 million if they are deemed to have violated the Financial Fair Play regulations. The proposed sale of Everton to 777 Partners may also be directly impacted by this legal action as well.

The argument behind the threat of legal action is that Everton missed relegation the previous seasons and that these rival teams would suffer financially from any fines imposed for breaking the rules.
