Lionel Messi, according to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, deserves to win the record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or. According to Arteta, he said that Messi is the most deserving recipient of the Ballon d’Or following his involvement in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup trophy after a 36-year spell.
He also praised the Argentine’s perseverance and dedication to the sport in the latter stages of his playing career. Arteta said to reporters:
“When you talk about Messi it can never be wrong. What he’s done, he won the World Cup, at his age, it was the pinnacle of his career. It’s just incredible, the consistency that he’s shown, the level that he’s put football into.”
The 36-year-old won his record eighth Golden Ball in Paris on Monday, defeating opposition from Erling Haaland of Manchester City and Kylian Mbappe, his former teammate at Paris Saint-Germain.
Inter Miami’s MLS season ended early due to their inability to qualify for the playoffs. Messi’s next appearance for La Albiceleste could come on November 17 when they meet Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
