Following Manchester United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United, Erik ten Hag says he “has to put it right.” At Old Trafford on Wednesday night, goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock decisively terminated the Red Devils’ Carabao Cup defence.
With style, the Magpies exacted revenge for their defeat in the competition finals from the previous season by setting unwelcome records on Ten Hag’s squad. Manager Ten Hag had accepted responsibility for the loss just days after his team was thrashed 3-0 by fierce rivals Manchester City, but he was still optimistic that he and his players can turn things around. After the game, he said:
“We know it’s not good enough. We have to take responsibility for it, I have to take responsibility for it. I feel sorry for the fans. It’s below our standards and I have to put it right.
“We have to recover from it. We have to do it quickly and Saturday is the next game. We have to raise our standards. This is not good enough. I am confident players will stand up, they are sticking together, you have seen they have tried but we know this is not good enough. I am responsible for this and we have to do this together.”
“You only get your confidence when you get the right results and that is only possible when you are following the rules, the principles, be in the game, winning your battles, going to the fight, but especially doing it together. You have to do it as a team”
“That is the only way; stick together, but you have to be disciplined and you have to do it with togetherness, everyone needs to take responsibility, be accountable and co-operate. That is the key word. We have a night’s sleep and then we will pick the team and the tactics and most important is the mentality we have to put in.”
United might not have much to play for in the upcoming months at this rate. They are seventh in the Premier League, players are struggling, and Ten Hag’s job is coming under more and more strain. Their chances of taking home trophies also appear to be dwindling. The club is having issues both on and off the pitch, and there doesn’t seem to be headway at the moment.
On Saturday, United will play Fulham at Craven Cottage in an attempt to avoid losing three games in a row across all competitions.
