Scott McTominay’s first and second half brace sealed a victory for Manchester United over Chelsea at the Old Trafford Stadium on Wednesday night.  McTominay scored both goals for the Man United in an entertaining 2-1 victory as the Devils recorded their first home win since November. The last time Manchester won a game at the Old Trafford was a Victor Lindelof lone goal against Luton.

Newcastle easily defeated United 1-0 last weekend, and while the result belied their play, it also raised concerns about Erik ten Hag and some of his star players in the locker room. At his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag insisted that most of the players were still behind him and that the team needed to respond against an inconsistent Chelsea team.

Thankfully, they succeeded in doing so right away by playing well from the opening whistle. Their persistence paid off in the 19th minute when Scott McTominay scored with a superb finish.

That atoned for Bruno Fernandes’ missed penalty kick in the ninth minute, but Chelsea equalized through Cole Palmer just before the halftime break despite numerous chances from both teams.

At the interval, Ten Hag made a substitution, bringing on Sergio Reguilon and shifting Luke Shaw to a central position to secure things at the back. The move worked, giving McTominay the opportunity to stride forward and shoot an inviting cross from Alejandro Garnacho to put Manchester United back in front in the 69th minute.

Elsewhere at the Villa Park, Manchester City were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa in a game the Cityzens recorded just two shots on target- the fewest ever by a Pep Guardiola’s side. After a barren draw in the first half, Leon Bailey scored for the Villans in the 74th minute to record their first win over City under Pep Guardiola.

It means Manchester United are now only three points behind their bitter rivals Manchester City.
