The franchises announced on Saturday that the New York Knicks acquired forward O.G. Anunoby in a trade that sends RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a 2024 second-round pick to the Toronto Raptors.
According to sources who spoke to ESPN, the Knicks have been courting Anunoby for a considerable amount of time and are desperate to re-sign him as a free agency this summer. In exchange, they are also receiving guard Malachi Flynn and forward Precious Achiuwa.
Anunoby, who went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft with the number 23 pick overall, won an NBA championship with the Raptors in 2019 and was selected to the All-Defensive second team for the 2022–2023 season. This season, he is averaging 15.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.6 rebounds.
This season, Barrett, who was selected by New York with the third overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, is averaging 18.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. The agreement forces the Canadian forward-guard to return for the foreseeable future to his own nation.
In addition to being selected for the 2020–21 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, Quickley was a finalist for the 2022–23 Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year. With the Knicks, he played in 253 games (27 starts) and averaged 12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 24.1 minutes per game.
After being acquired from Miami in August 2021, Achiuwa averaged 8.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 21.6 minutes per game in 153 games (40 starts) with Toronto. The Raptors selected Flynn with the 29th overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft. In 175 career games (21 starts), he averaged 5.4 points, 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 15.0 minutes.
