Courtesy of an own-goal from Opa Sanganté, the Super of Eagles of Nigeria qualified for the AFCON 2023 knockout stage as the second team in Group A, right behind Equitorial Guinea.
Actively in search of their maiden win at the tournament, the Djurtus restricted the Super Eagles’ intensity to a reasonable extent, before being dealt a major blow in the 36th minute when Sanganté sent his attempted clearance past his goalkeeper to hand Nigeria a fortunate lead into the break.
The second half resumed with both teams going at each other, before Victor Osimhen was denied a tap-in in the 59th minute, due to a handball in the buildup.
In the 84th minute, the West African giant found the back of the net again through Ola Aina, but celebrations were caught off due to an offside, as the Super Eagles claimed a win in their 100th AFCON appearance to make it into the round of 16 behind Equitorial Guinea who trounced Ivory Coast 4-0 in the other final group game to make qualify tops of the Group on goal difference.
