Barcelona’s manager, Xavi Hernandez, has reiterated his side’s resilience in the La Liga title race, ahead of their Matchday 26 fixture against Getafe on Saturday.

Barcelona are currently eight points behind table toppers Real Madrid, but Xavi has said his side is still in the title race and will not throw in the towel, despite the foreseeable challenge.

The Blaugrana will be heading into Saturday’s game against Getafe on the back of a 1-1 draw with Napoli on Wednesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) last-16 tie at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Italy.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Xavi said: “Getafe are not a defensive team, they are a brave team. They press very high up the pitch, and they have picked up points at some tricky away grounds. They always compete, and Bordalás always gets the most out of his players, and that is worthy of praise,” Fcbarcelona.com reports.

“The points are very important for the battle for the league title. As long as we are mathematically involved, we will fight for it. Each week is a different story. We can’t drop points, less so at home.

He then added that Barcelona can pressure clubs like Real Madrid and Girona if they show resistance. “We would go to be in second place in the table and that will put more pressure on Girona and Real Madrid, who play later. We are not throwing in the towel, even though we know that it will be tough.”

“We will see how we come into the game, but it is the moment for the best players. We will make some changes but not many, because it is a vital match. It would have been better to play on Sunday or Monday but that is no excuse,” the Spaniard said.

With 16 wins and four draws in their last home meeting against Getafe, Barcelona will be looking to get a positive result when they take on José Bordalás’ side at the Estadi Olímpic Luis Companys by 4:15 pm (WAT) on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
