Celta Vigo has today, March 12 2024, parted ways with manager Rafa Benitez, bringing an end to his eight-month stint at the club.
Benitez’s dismissal is coming on the back of Celta’s 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.
The Spanish club signed Benitez on a three-year deal on June 23, 2023. However, the ex-Liverpool manager has won just five of his 28 league matches in charge of the club, and they’re currently seated 17th on the log, just two points above the relegation zone.
“Rafa Benítez and his coaching staff leave RC Celta after eight months of absolute commitment and full dedication, but in which the team has not obtained the results expected by the club,” Celta’s official statement reads.
“The club would like to express its most sincere gratitude to Rafa Benítez and his assistants for the involvement, honesty and professionalism they have shown since their arrival and the tireless work they have done. RC Celta also wants to wish them good luck and success in the future,” the dismissal statement concluded.
Celta Vigo will next be in action against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium on Sunday, March 17.
