Bukayo Saka has come under criticism for attempting to get Arsenal a penalty late in the Champions League match against Bayern Munich. Former West Ham and Juventus forward Paulo Di Canio slammed the England international as he angrily challenged the referee at the end of the game.

The 55-year-old believes the Arsenal player made contact with Manuel Neuer and that it was the correct judgement not to award a penalty. Saka appeared to have an empty net to aim at had he stayed on his feet, but he chose to go down with only seconds left on the clock.

Asides from the theatrics at the end, Saka had a solid game in front of his home crowd, scoring his fourth Champions League goal of the season. His contributions ensure Arsenal will travel to Germany on par with Bayern Munich, who have been susceptible under Thomas Tuchel in 2024. They will enjoy their chances of progressing and face either Manchester City or Real Madrid.

Speaking during Sky Sports Italy’s Champions League coverage, Di Canio said: “He moves blatantly the leg towards Neuer, it’s never a penalty. He didn’t behave as an experienced player. He behaved liked a baby with no experience.”

Arsenal reversed a string of three successive 5-1 losses to Bayern with a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium. Harry Kane, a former Tottenham player, had another great night against the Gunners, scoring his 15th goal with a penalty of his own.

For the next week, Mikel Arteta’s side will have to put the Champions League out of their minds as they prepare to return to Premier League action. Their position at the top of the standings is due to the Gunners’ superior goal difference over Liverpool, but they will face a difficult match when Aston Villa visit on Sunday.
