The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Orlando Magic 96-86 in second game of their first-round playoff series on Monday thanks to yet another impressive performance from star guard Donovan Mitchell.
The Cavaliers jumped off to a 2-0 series lead behind Mitchell’s game-high 23 points, 19 of which came in the first half, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block. He finished Saturday’s first game with 30 points.
With a three-pointer to start the game, the 27-year-old set the tone. Before slowing down in the second half, he gave an electrifying performance in the first. Nevertheless, he made some crucial baskets in the fourth quarter. Mitchell was among the five Cavaliers who scored ten or more points. Jarrett Allen finished with 16 points and 20 rebounds, and Evan Mobley contributed 17 points. 15 points came from Darius Garland, and 10 points came from Isaac Okoro as a substitute.
With 21 points, Paolo Banchero led the Magic, and Franz Wagner chipped in with 18. Before Orlando attempted a late, unsuccessful rally, Cleveland had a 22-point lead. The Magic have now lost two straight games when they have been restricted to fewer than 90 points.
Mitchell looks to be on a mission after two playoff games. Cleveland has a great chance to go deep in the Eastern Conference playoffs if he keeps playing this well.
The Cavaliers and Magic will play again on Thursday at the Kia Centre before the series travels to Orlando for Game 3. Orlando will host its first playoff game at home since 2020.
