The Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated from the series on Wednesday after losing Game 5 in Boston 113-98 due to injuries to guards Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert. LeVert was limited by a bone bruise on his left knee, and Mitchell was suffering from a tight left calf. Due to a calf injury, Mitchell missed Game 4 on Monday.
Despite the Cavaliers’ valiant efforts, they were unable to overcome the Boston Celtics, who seized a 3-1 lead in their East quarterfinal series, falling 109-102. After the All-Star break, Mitchell has been suffering with a left knee ailment. On Saturday, in the final moments of Cleveland’s Game 3 loss, he sustained another injury.
In Game 4, Cleveland challenged the top-seeded Celtics to the limit despite the absence of Mitchell and starting centre Jarrett Allen, who missed his seventh straight game due to a rib injury. In the final two minutes, the Cavaliers were within five points, but Max Strus missed a three-point shot and Cleveland was unable to secure a defensive stop.
In his second postseason with the Cavaliers, Mitchell has been indispensable. Before a difficult summer for him and the Cavs, he entered Monday’s game averaging 29.6 points in these playoffs. Although he is qualified to sign a contract extension, he has not made it clear if he wants to leave Cleveland or stay. Since suffering an injury during Cleveland’s first-round series loss to the Orlando Magic, Allen has been unable to participate in games.
Before getting hurt, he had been a dominant player, averaging 13.8 rebounds and 17 points per game. In the Cavaliers’ Game 2 victory over the Magic, he pulled down 20 rebounds. In Mitchell’s place, Darius Garland came through with 30 points and seven assists in 40 minutes.
