Real Madrid secured their sixth UEFA Super Cup title on Wednesday, defeating Atalanta 2-0 in Warsaw, courtesy of Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappe goals.
The victory over Atalanta gave Madrid a record-breaking sixth UEFA Super Cup, after winning six Champions League titles in the past 10 years.
Real Madrid started the game quietly in the first half but displayed dominance in the second half through the brilliance of Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham who both set up Valverde and Mbappe’s goals respectively to claim the trophy.
Frenchman Mbappe led the line for his new club for the first time, and made it a perfect and memorable one, capping it with a debut goal and his first UEFA trophy.
Mbappe described the night “a great night”. He said, “I’ve been waiting for this moment a long time, to play in this shirt, with this badge, for these fans. It’s a great moment for me.
“Winning a trophy is very important, we know that we always have to win. I’m very happy, for sure with the goal, for a forward like me, being decisive in my first game, but more importantly, it’s a pleasure to play”, he added.
Clinching the UEFA Super Cup title also saw Luka Modric became the most decorated player in Real Madrid history with 27 trophies, 12 years after he left Tottenham Hotspur at 27 years old with nothing on his trophy cabinet.
It was not only a historic night for the club and Modric, it was also one for Carlo Ancelotti, who secured his 14th title as Real Madrid head coach, levelled with the Miguel Munoz as the most successful manager in the club’s history in terms of trophies won.
Speaking after the game, he expressed his pride at the feat, describing it “an honour and a privilege” to achieve such, while also praising his team for the victory and Kylian Mbappe for his debut achievement.
Real Madrid will now turn their attention to the opening match of their 2024-25 La Liga campaign on Sunday, where they will take on Mallorca away from home.
