Jannik Sinner fought off Frances Tiafoe charge in straight sets on Friday to win his maiden of the Cincinnati Open title.
The Italian and World No.1 who turned 23 this week, defeated the American home favourite 7-6(1), 6-2 on centre court in Ohio to claim his 15th career title.
“It’s a special week for me here.. it’s my birthday week.” Sinner said while on court interview.
“I usually don’t like birthdays. But this one was feels very special.
“I want to thank my team for staying next to me all the time. Especially in the tough moments.. We had quite a lot. I’m happy to win this tournament here. But also to the people who are close to me and understand me every day, thank you so much,” He concluded.
“Super happy to see you playing at this level again. I know you had a very tough last year.. You’re making very good progress. I wish you luck in New York,” Jannik Sinner tells Frances Tiafoe after the game.
Sunday’s victory means Jannik Sinner has won his 15th career ATP title from 19 finals. Equalling Carlos Alcaraz and Lleyton Hewitt (19), only Rafael Nadal (17) has won more from his first 19 ATP event finals in the Open Era.
He has also won a third ATP Masters 1000 title on hard court. In the past decade, only three players have won more Masters titles on the surface – Novak Djokovic (17), Roger Federer (7) and Daniil Medvedev (5).
