Daniil Medvedev brought order back to the US Open evening session on Saturday, following the turbulent departures of past champions Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz the previous two nights.
The 28-year-old defeated young Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and eighteen minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, He is currently the only previous champion still competing in the men’s event.
“I said it before the match that for me the upsets don’t really matter. The only thing [is when] the conditions are a bit tricky the favourites maybe have less margin than the other guys. Just have to be more cautious,” said Medvedev, who improved to 38-13 on the season [21-6 on hard courts].
“If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don’t play good I can lose against anyone.”
The former number one in the PIF ATP Rankings is still on course for a thrilling quarterfinal meeting against the number one seed right now, Jannik Sinner, who faces Tommy Paul of the United States in the round of 16.
Medvedev will next meet Portugal’s Nuno Borges in a fourth-round showdown on Monday.
Nuno Borges, who is having an incredible year, saves three consecutive match points in the 4th set tie break and comes back to beat 18 year-old Jakub Mensik 6-7(5), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-0 to reach the last 16 at the US Open for the first time.
His Second career Grand slam second week appearance after the Australian Open in February this year. He also became the second ever Portuguese to make the US Open second week since João Sousa in 2018.
Earlier, Alex de Minaur advanced to the US Open second week for the fourth time in his career on Saturday night by defeating an injured Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-0.
The victory put him back within the Top 10 of the ATP Live Rankings. Since Lleyton Hewitt 20 years ago, the top-ranked Australian player is also the first to reach the fourth round of every major in a single season.
In the second week, he teams up with fellow countrymen Alexei Popyrin and Jordan Thompson, whom he will face on Monday.
