According to two sources with knowledge of the matter, the Detroit Pistons and former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams have come to an agreement. Williams agreed to a six-year contract, one of the sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday night while speaking on the condition of anonymity because the arrangement had not yet been made public.

Williams’ six-year contract, which is worth $78.8 million, would be the most expensive coaching contract in NBA history, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Phoenix dismissed Williams two weeks ago or more, a year after he was named the league’s coach of the year and two years after the team made it to the NBA Finals.

Williams, 51, won 63% of the games he played in with the Suns during the course of four regular seasons, but Phoenix was ousted in the Western Conference semifinals twice in a row after falling to Milwaukee in the 2021 NBA Finals. If the Pistons could achieve that level of success anytime soon under Williams, they would be overjoyed.

Under Dwane Casey, who resigned as coach with one year remaining on his contract to accept a position in the front office, Detroit lost 30% or fewer games for the fourth consecutive season while winning an NBA-low 17 games last season.

The Pistons did not do well in the Draft Lottery, selecting fifth overall for the second year in a row and passing up the chance to select Victor Wembanyama.

Detroit, a three-time NBA champion team, has only qualified for the playoffs twice over the past 14 years. The Nos. 5 and 13 overall picks from last summer, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, respectively, did offer some promise for the future with their performance. The No. 1 overall pick in 2021, Cade Cunningham, had his second season cut short after only 12 games due to shin surgery.

Bojan Bogdanovic, who had a point total of 21.6 on average last season, Isaiah Stewart, James Wiseman, and Marvin Bagley are anticipated to return.

A seasoned leader will sit on the bench for the young team, which will include some experienced players in the rotation.

In nine seasons as the NBA’s head coach, Williams had a 367-336 record with a 29-27 postseason mark. He worked for the New Orleans Pelicans for five years before they sacked him in 2015 despite his 173-221 record and two playoff appearances.
