Super Eagles’ attacker and CAF award favourite, Ademola Lookman has credited his nomination for playing for the Nigeria’s men team.
Ademola Lookman became a sensation for Nigeria during the AFCON where he registered three goals to see the Eagles getting to the final in Ivory Coast. The Super Eagles’ were close to clinching the title for the first time in 11 years before a second half goal from Sebastian Haller dashed the hopes of the three-time AFCON winner.
Despite the disappointment, Lookman was still a standout both with his home country and club Atalanta where he has been shining like a bright star.
A prosperous 2024
Lookman wrapped up a brilliant 2023/2024 football season with a hattrick against Bayer Leverkusen at the Europa League final in May. Scoring three goals, Lookman became the first player to do so and also ended the German club’s 51-game unbeaten streak.
Despite his heroic performances at the Europa and Serie A respectively last season where he registered 18 goal contributions in 31 games, Lookman has proved not as a one-season wonder with the masterpieces he has shown his season.
The 27-year-old has scored eight goals and assisted four times in 12 games in the Serie A. He has also gone to show his skills in the champions league where he scored against top clubs his club had faced in the European competition this season. Lookman has registered three goals, one of which was against defending champions, Real Madrid.
Reflecting on Super Eagles’ on his nomination, Lookman said; “That was a big turning point in my career. Ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful.”
“We’re still growing together as a team. The togetherness of the squad is special; we showed that at the last AFCON. We got to the final, and unfortunately, we came up a bit short, but the foundations are there.”
“It’s just a fantastic feeling to be a part of, to be able to hold that with pride, to be able to say I represented my country.”
With all his performances for Atalanta this season, Lookman has emphasized that being favourites for CAF awards was representing Nigeria.
