Captain Kalidou Koulibaly has finally broken the silence over Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) exit, a few days after the host nation Ivory Coast got the better of them on penalties.

The defending champions who were tipped as clear favourites heading into the tournament won all their three group stage matches before surprisingly going down to an Ivory Coast team that qualified as one of the best losers of the group stage.

Taking to his social media page, Koulibaly said: “We are all very disappointed to be eliminated at this stage of the competition. All the hopes based on our selection, in order to retain this title of African champions, collapsed after this defeat against the host country, Ivory Coast.

“This is also why we want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for your unwavering and unwavering support.

“Believe in your dreams and maybe they will come true. By the will of Allah, this team will continue to make you dream and will bring you other trophies in TERANGA.

“Thank you, Senegalese people. Together, let’s believe in our dreams and in the national team. Believe in yourself (Lions of Senegal) and you will surely become champions again.”

The next AFCON will be hosted by Morocco in 2025, and it remains to be seen if 32-year-old Koulibaly will be part of Senegal’s squad by then.
