Arsenal lost 2-0 away to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday evening. William Saliba was sent off, leaving them with 10 men for the final 60 minutes at the Vitality Stadium.
Ryan Christie scored from a Bournemouth corner in the 70th minute, and Justin Cluivert made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. Earlier, a deep free-kick by Lewis Cook was headed away by Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal struggled to create any clear chances in the first 30 minutes. Raheem Sterling’s cross went wide of the post. Everything changed in the 28th minute when Leandro Trossard played the ball back to Raya.
Evanilson looked ready to intercept, and Saliba pulled him back. Saliba was first shown a yellow card, but VAR asked Rob Jones to review it. After checking the monitor, Saliba’s punishment was upgraded to a red card.
Gabriel blocked a shot from Semenyo, and they almost took the lead when Sterling’s cross was hooked wide by Mikel Merino, who was making his first start for us. Mikel Arteta brought Jakub Kiwior on in the 36th minute to strengthen the defence, with Sterling coming off.
Semenyo remained dangerous, but Raya saved his efforts, even spilling one cross before denying Marcus Tavernier on the rebound. Thomas Partey volleyed over the bar, and we went into the break with the score still 0-0 after an eventful first half.
UEFA Champions League football returns as Arsenal host Shakhtar Donetsk for an 8pm kick-off on Tuesday. Then they’ll be back in Premier League action against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium at 4.30pm on Sunday.
