Dan Ashworth has already decided on the first associates he’ll be signing as Manchester United’s new sporting director. Earlier this week, there were claims that United intend to employ Ashworth as the club’s next sporting director from Newcastle United.
Ashworth reportedly notified the Magpies, where he has been working as a sporting director for the past two years, that he had gotten a formal offer from the Red Devils. According to The Sun, the 52-year-old has already decided on his first signing after formally joining the club.
Ashworth wants to recruit Chelsea’s head analyst, Kyle Macaulay, to the club, believing him to be a significant addition to his staff. Macaulay joined the Blues last season when they signed former Brighton manager Graham Potter.
Manchester United are also considering hiring Ipswich’s technical director, Sam Williams. Ashworth’s appointment marks another big event for the Manchester club after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS purchased a 25% share in late December.
Right after Ratcliffe came, the club announced the signing of Omar Berrada as CEO from Manchester City. Erik ten Hag’s side, who are on a four-game winning streak, will next face Luton Town in a Premier League match on Sunday.
