Aston Villa returns to top European football with a perfect win

Aston Villa marked their return to the UEFA Champions League with a comfortable 3-0 victory over BSC Young Boys on Tuesday.

Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana were all on target as Aston Villa claimed all three points in the tournament’s opener. Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran also had strikes ruled out for handball.

Young Boys started as the best side as they threatened to break the deadlock through efforts from Ebrima Colley. However, they could not take the lead and were punished by the English team.

A straight from training kind of set-piece put Villa ahead as John McGinn picked up Lucas Digne’s short corner and sent a beautiful cross to an unmarked Tielemans, who comfortably fired into the bottom left corner for Villa’s first goal.

Young Boys produced some erroneous defending to gift Villa the second goal. A short pass saw goalkeeper David von Ballmoos take out Watkins in the penalty area. However, before referee Georgi Kabakov could point to the spot, Ramsey sent the loose ball into the net.

After two disallowed goals, Onana finally sealed the victory with a sweet strike from 25 yards into in the bottom left corner.

Aston Villa ensured a perfect start to Villa’s return to the Champions League competition after 42 years.
