Watkins tried to redeem the lead for the English side but his effort was disallowed for offside. The striker was then chucked off due to injury and was replaced by Jhon Duran at the break.

However, the Colombia international had his usual impact, as he curled a stunning long-range shot over Gulacsi.

Leipzig equalise again as Christoph Baumgartner scored, with the German side hoping to acquire their first point in Europe this season.

They were however denied after Barkley was introduced. The English midfielder sent a speculative effort from distance, which deflected into the net, for Villa’s win.

The crucial goal catapulted Villa from floundering outside the top eight, to sitting pretty in third position.

RB Leipzig are automatically out of the competition, even with two games remaining. They are at the bottom of the table, with zero points from six games.
