Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund played a 2-2 draw in a rollercoaster Der Klassiker game.
Both teams scored twice in the second half to share the points at the Allianz Arena stadium.
Vincent Kompany’s team went into the clash knowing a victory would take them eight points clear at the top, following Bayer Leverkusen’s draw with Union Berlin.
However, they ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils against Niko Kovac’s team.
Bayern started stronger as Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was kept busy in the first half. He twice denied Harry Kane and also blocked Michael Olise’s effort in the 40th minute.
Both teams failed to break the deadlock as they ended the first-half goalless, with BVB owning zero shot on target.
Howbeit, Dortmund went ahead to get the opener early in the second half. The visitors found the net as Maximilian Beier was left unmarked at the far post to head in the opener.
Four minutes after, the home side responded back, when Raphael Guerreiro levelled in the 65th with a low shot.
Bayern then took the few minutes after as substitute Serge Gnabry put them in front with a sensational solo effort.
The visitors bounced back with their equaliser, as Vlademar Anton slotted home on the rebound in the 75th minute after Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig palmed Serhou Guirassy’s bicycle kick into his path.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund’s hopes for the Champions League spot looks slim as they sit eighth in the Bundesliga, six points off the top four.
Both side will now return for their return leg of the UCL quarter finals, hoping to overturn the first-leg results.
Bayern trail to Inter Milan 2-1, while Dortmund are tasked with a heavy burden, following their 4-0 loss to Barcelona.
