Barcelona has sacked Xavi Hernández as their head coach, effective from Sunday, May 26, after the club’s final game of the 2023/24 season.

This comes a few weeks after the club’s president Joan Laporta convinced Xavi to maintain his status as their manager, following the latter’s announcement of departure in January.

“I believe this is an unfinished project. We have to continue working on it and I have the strength to do it. I think it’s the best decision for the club,” Xavi said whilst explaining his decision to say.

“I’m a huge Barca fan. I have a high level of trust with the president and the board of directors. The support of the players has also been key. I want to thank them for their love and support.”

As it turned out, the club announced their split via their website with a statement that reads, “Today Friday, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has informed Xavi Hernández that he will not be continuing as first team coach in the 2024-25 season.

“The meeting happened at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and was also attended by sporting vice-president Rafa Yuste, director of sport Anderson Luís de Souza, Deco, Xavi, Òscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre.

“FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”

While the club didn’t reveal the reason behind their decision, reports indicate that ex-Bayern Munich Hansi Flick will succeed Xavi.
