Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has missed out on Belgium’s squad for the European Championship in Germany this summer

This exclusion is coming off Courtois’ recent return from injury in April, having suffered a knee ligament injury back in August 2023. The 32-year-old had to undergo another surgery in March to correct a setback in his recuperation.

Ukrainian Adnrey Lunin has been Carlo  Ancelotti’s No 1 throughout the season in the absence of Courtois, but the Belgian since his return has featured in four out of Madrid’s last six matches

However, Belgium’s coach Domenico Tedesco overlooked the 32-year-old for VfL Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels, Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski and Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels.

Recall that in June 2023, Courtois and Tedesco had disagreed over the goalkeeper’s decision to withdraw from Belgium’s Euros qualifier against Estonia.

The row stems from the coach’s assertion that the ex-Chelsea goalie was offended for not being selected as the country’s captain in their last game against Austria, as opposed to his knee injury excuse.

Below is Belgium’s squad list as announced by the Royal Belgian Football Association on Tuesday:

Goalkeeper: Casteels, Kaminski, Sel

Defenders: Castagne, De Cuyper, Faes, Meunier, Theate, Vertonghen

Midfielders: De Bruyne, O.Mangala, Onana, Tielemans, Vermeeren, Witsel, Vranck

Forward: J.Bakayoko, Carrasco, De Ketelaere, Doku, Lukaku, Lukebakio, Openda, Trossard.
